July 29, 2009 HELLO ! A typical bullfrog mug shot – no matter how many
of these shots I collect, I can't resist shooting
another one !
(What IS it about frog faces?)

PASSING IN THE NIGHT
An accidental encounter – frogs hop and plop, and often end up close to each other for no particular reason. (See the header picture on The Frogs page for the funniest "hop and plop" I've seen so far.) Mr. Green Frog (upper one below) is flushed with yellow – which means he's puffed up, and GLUNK-ing, and looking for girls.
Who knows what Ms. Bullfrog is thinking ("Who IS this crazy guy?")
July 27, 2009 THUMBELINA (Thumbelino?)
The same spring peeper as July 22.
The dark spot at the rear end is where the
tadpole tail got absorbed into the body.

THE MYSTERY OF THE LINES
I have discovered that many of my frogs have these striated scars on their face and back. (Notice similar lines on the nose of the July 25 frog below.)
I have a theory about this... see the Scarface page.

I need to make a page about duckweed – in this pond, it's the only thing that there is MORE of than frogs!
July 24, 2009
Typical scene on a sunny day, when they come out onto the shore. Bullfrog on the left, green frog on the right. Notice the bullfrog's left hand parked on the green frog's back.

You must have seen them hoppity-plopping in your headlights on a warm rainy night. Who are they? See Frogs in the Road for a non-scientific investigation.
I found out last night that, in my neighborhood anyway, half of them are TOADS (land-based critters not seen in my pond).
Here's the "class picture" of last night's rescued road toads

(The "X" marking is diagnostic – more on the Spring Peepers page.)
Found two of these little guys hopping AWAY from the pond. Guess that's a clue to my question as to whether they spend the winter in the pond or in the woods across the street.
Check out the tadpole tail. I captured them to find out how fast they absorb their tails. (See July 27 Frog of the Day for an update.)

Today's pond surprise – a raft of new eggs! (About 6 inches across)
What kind are they? I'll capture a few and see what develops.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
What's the deal with the GIANT eardrums on male green frogs?
If I touch that yellow button, does the frog hear a sonic boom?

A green frog sittin' around
July 18, 2009
Two bullfrogs on the lookout for their next meal.
NOTHING is safe from these guys... like those new U.S. Postal Service ads say... if it fits, it ships! (Even if it DOESN'T fit, these guys will make it work – see The Food Chain page.)

A warm wet night... gets the frogs out of the pond and into the yard
July 16, 2009
This green frog saw the INSIDE of a bullfrog stomach and lived to tell the tale! Actually, HE's not talking, but I am. Story coming soon ...

News flash! .. not a frog...
All of a sudden dragonflies are zooming all over the place. Happens every year about this time, but this beautiful blue version is NEW this year. (Here goes the start of the Dragonflies page!)

Q: What's wrong with this blissful scene?
A: The top one is a green frog, the bottom one is a bullfrog!
